Zaller Gallery (16006 Waterloo) has curated a litany of Cleveland’s finest alternative artists for an anti-valentines day show tonight complete with edgy live music acts Leah Lou, Leia Von Hohenfeld and Her Magical Music Box, Mr. California and the Smoldering Butt Bitches. The Waterloo Alley Cat Project fundraiser is just one of a billion things happening this weekend for the Walk All Over Waterloo Valentines Edition. Check it out at the Beachland from 7-9 PM with local legends Rainy Day Saints and up-and-coming bands Filmstrip and Prisoners. There is plenty of stuff happening in the neighborhood at Arts Collinwood, Music Saves, Blue Arrow Records, and more so stick around.

Ohio City gets some more love today with the opening of Rag Refinery. Leigh Ring, co-proprietor of the former alternative arts Pink Eye Magazine, brings a buy/sell/trade apparel concept shop to 3900 Lorain Avenue. Having been inspired by such shops while living in San Fransisco, Ring saw an opportunity to bring a similar vintage experience to Cleveland. The space also includes Pink Eye Gallery featuring works of local artists.

This evenings grand opening extravaganza is FREE and OPEN to the public. The party includes performances by local bands, and a preview tasting of menu items from Palookaville Chili. Palookaville will open soon next door to the Rag Refinery by Leigh Ring’s former Pink Eye Magazine partner and artist, Ian P.E..

PechaKucha Night Cleveland hosts their 11th Session Tonight at the House of Blues. Come see the presentation of fresh ideas from the world of design. The event is FREE and open to the public!

The first PechaKucha Night took place in Tokyo, and is a Japanese word for “the sound of conversation.” The format (now found in 300 cities across the globe) features a succession of 14 “speakers”, each sharing their new design ideas from diverse fields. These rapid-fire, 400 second long presentations (20 slides per presenter X 20 seconds per slide) keep audiences engaged while breaking down barriers between different design communities.

Survival Kit is one of Cleveland’s newest and coolest art galleries. It doubles as an alternative event space, and they’re setting up their first ever “Fourth Coast Pop Up Market” pop up market tonight. Limited edition local art, vintage clothing, records and more. Survival Kit is located in the 78th Street Studios Complex at 1305 W 80th Ste 3C. Browse the goods tonight until 11 PM, and tomorrow 12-6 PM.

Walk All Over Waterloo events now happen every weekend this Holiday Season, and are packed with special happenings at neighborhood businesses. Rock and Roll Flea Markets come to the Beachland Ballroom, the Native Cleveland shop opens to the public, Music Saves offers a 10% discount, and more!

(Happening on the other side of the river today) Ohio City taps into its German roots with the first annual Christmas Festival all day today. Modeled after a traditional Weihnachtsmarkt, individual outdoor stands sell Christmas ornaments, nuts, candy and specialty gifts. A pair of Cleveland’s favorite young rock bands, Filmstrip and Clovers, play tonight at Happy Dog. The Mermaids join them and bring some noisy fun with their southern surf rock all the way from Atlanta. They should complement Filmstrip’s fuzzy rustbelt rock and Clover’s watery Lake Erie surf, and make this evening’s lineup of hot male rock quartets a good one.

Filmstrip’s brotherly love has become even more brotherly. Seth Taha (pictured above second to the left) is the newest member of Filmstrip. He joins his brothers Matt and Dave, and helps intensify their future punk sound on guitar.

You won’t want to miss any of these bands, so be at Happy Dog no later than 9:30 PM - $5.

HotChaCha is back home and playing a show tonight at the Happy Dog. Its been over a month since their last appearance in Cleveland, because they’ve been living out of van and playing a non-stop tour. Although they may be killing themselves with copious amounts of alcohol and literal bloodshed they appear to have an “oh well” attitude about it. Check out this recent interview with a metal music blog. The video above was done by Noel Maitland and the song “Traffic” is from their most recent EP, Fantastic Static.

Cover is $5, which isn’t very much to see a band like HotChaCha, but we hope to hear more than their usual three song ten minute set.

You might be in a book club, or know someone who is, but a group of people got together last year to start something called a record club. Once a month the record club group puts names in a hat and then buys that person a record. They get together, listen to records, get drunk and repeat the process. All are welcome to attend their one year anniversary potluck party with bands. Chief bromide, Palaces, Homostupids, Self Destruct Button and Milk n’ Cookies all play starting at 10 PM. Come to the Great Lakes Brewing Company tonight for the first public look at the future of Wendy Park on Whisky Island. Parkworks and the Cuyahoga Planning Commission push forward and present the plan with representatives of the San Francisco design firm, CMG. With incredible views of the lake, skyline, and a rustic natural beauty, we are excited to see what’s ahead. Although this is undoubtedly a space for all Clevelanders, the residents of downtown, the Flats, Ohio City and Tremont should especially feel energized and come to the public presentation. The FREE happening takes place from 6:30 - 8 PM in the Tasting Room at Great Lakes Brewing Company. All are welcome.
